Installation of the ATI Proprietary Linux Driver Using ATI Installer

Requirements and precautions

The following is expected to be present in order for the installation to be completed without errors:

Installation

Driver installation can be done from X Window System by running the graphical installer, or from the console mode by running the text mode installer. In both cases, installation process is similar.

To start driver installation, just run ati-installer-<...>.run. You have to do this with superuser privileges.

Before displaying the installation dialog, the installer unpacks itself and tries to detect configuration of your system (the version of X Window system you're running, and whether you use 32-bit or 64-bit platform). If you notice that detected configuration is not what you actually have, please cancel the installation and provide ATI with feedback (via www.ati.com). Also, if the installer cannot detect the configuration of your machine, it will exit. However, it will provide you with information how you can manually force installation.

If there are no problems during extraction and detection phases, the installer displays the installation dialog. The dialog has two options: "Install Driver <driver version> on X <version> and Generate Distribution Specific Driver Package. You need to choose the first option and press the Continue button. You'll be required to read the End User License Agreement and press the I Agree button to continue installation.

The next dialog will offer you to choose automatic or custom mode of installation. The custom mode allows you to choose which particular parts of the driver will be installed. It's mostly used for expert type of installation. Therefore, choose the automatic mode for straightforward installation.

After this, driver files will be copied to your system, and all necessary modifications and compilations will be done. As soon as this process finishes, you'll see a dialog box containing the instructions telling you how to finalize the installation. Most important things you have to do are checking the installation logfile (/usr/share/fglrx/fglrx-install.log) for errors, running aticonfig (or fglrxconfig) upon exit from the installer, and rebooting the system to make sure that the freshly compiled kernel module is loaded.

Uninstallation

To uninstall the driver, change the directory to /usr/share/fglrx and run fglrx-uninstall.sh. You have to do this with superuser privileges. The unistallation script should remove all filles copied by the installer, and restore your system to the original state it had before installation.

Notes about mixing installations done with the installer and package installations

Generally, mixing installations via different methods shouldn't break the system, but uninstallation after using mixed installation methods can cause system inconsistencies, so that it's highly discouraged.
