3D Linux applications exhibit tearing in fast moving objects

This information applies to the following:

  • ATI Proprietary Linux Driver 3.7.1 and 3.7.6

Upon launching a 3D application, horizontal tearing may occur. The symptoms may appear during full screen, windowed, or 3D screen captures. The issue occurs regardless of the "sync with vertical" setting in

fglrxconfig
.

Not all systems are affected.

One possible workaround, which has been known to minimize this behavior in some cases, is to enable the OpenGL Overlay, in place of the Video (Xv) Overlay. This may be accomplished as follows:
  1. Open /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 in a text editor
  2. Look for the following lines in the ATI device section:
Option "VideoOverlay" "on" Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off"
  3. And change them as follows:
Option "VideoOverlay" "off" Option "OpenGLOverlay" "on"
  4. Save /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
  5. Restart X-Windows

ATI Engineering is aware of this issue and is investigating. Updates will appear on this page when they become available.
