K12Linux

K12Linux is Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP) for Fedora. This enables any Fedora machine to become a terminal server, serving a network bootable thin client operating system over a network to diskless clients. The primary benefit of diskless clients in the LTSP model is extreme cost savings from central management and central authentication.

There are two ways to try K12Linux:

  • Boot & run K12Linux from a USB key. From the Downloads section below, get the K12Linux ISO file and one of the tools for installing it onto a USB key (there's a Linux tool and a Windows tool). Use the tool to install the ISO image onto a USB key. Boot the server from the USB key and follow the instructions in the README that appears on the desktop. Once the system is running, you can also install it onto the server's hard drive if you wish (and is recommended for production use). The K12Linux ISO file can also be installed onto & run from a DVD. However, the performance of the USB key method is signficantly better and is therefore preferred.
  • Install K12Linux via yum onto a machine that already has Fedora 9 installed. See the InstallGuide below for details.
